When to schedule fall gutter cleaning in Atlanta

Most metro Atlanta leaves come down from late October through early December. Here's how to time your cleaning so you're not paying for it twice.

Fall is the season everyone thinks of for gutter cleaning, and for good reason. But clean too early and your gutters refill within weeks. Wait too long and winter rain lands on clogged gutters for months. The right date depends on your trees.

When Atlanta trees drop their leaves

Sweetgums, maples and tulip poplars usually start shedding in October. Oaks, the biggest source of leaves in most Atlanta yards, tend to finish last, often into December, and some hold dry brown leaves well into winter. Pines drop older needles heavily in fall and keep shedding in smaller amounts all year.

So a yard with mostly maples and poplars might be done by Thanksgiving, while a yard full of oaks keeps dropping until the holidays.

A simple way to time it

  • A few trees nearby: one cleaning after the leaves are down, usually late November to mid-December.
  • Heavy hardwoods: two fall visits, one in early November to keep things flowing and one after the last oaks drop.
  • Heavy pines: pines don't stop, so plan on a cleaning every 3 to 4 months year-round. Fall is one of them.

Why you shouldn't skip it

Atlanta winters bring far more rain than snow. Clogged gutters spend that whole season spilling water behind the gutter into fascia and soffits and down beside your foundation. Wet leaves also get heavy, and a packed gutter can pull loose from the house. If your downspouts feed buried pipes, everything that washes in this winter is still in the pipe next spring.

Signs you can't wait

  • Water pouring over the front of the gutter in a normal rain
  • A gutter that sags or has pulled away from the house
  • Plants or seedlings growing out of the gutter
  • Water pooling beside the foundation, or a damp crawlspace or basement

Want it done for you? Gutter cleaning starts at $125, with a full inspection and photos.
